@Willem: Tags *are* multi-assignable categories. You just have to build your menu system on tags instead of categories.
The usual categories are like directories/folders in your file system.

The upcoming TAG feature in Joomla 3.1/3.2 is super great!!! But, it does not solve the multi-category issue.
For instance my website - news.caribseek.com - has as categories Caribbean Islands and the menu sytem is based on these categories. Many times we have the need to be able to assign more than one category to a news item, for instance in the case of a baseball match between Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
If we have a news item in one category (say Curaçao), and with Aruba and Puerto Rico as tags, than the news item will ONLY appear under Curaçao when selected in the menu system and NOT under Aruba or Puerto Rico when they are selected in the menu system because the menu system is based on categories.
Categories and Tags are different concepts, and having both in Joomla! would be excellent!!!

This really shows many of the things that is compalete crap about Joomla. You can not really create anything that is not of poor quality if you are not a web designer etc. Joomla is very simple and poor. It is made for people with no knowledge of web development that creates crapy web sites. It is better to save money and give and buy a pro web site. I sick and tired of these problems with Joomla. A multiple category is so god them basic, and should be in every CMS-system. I think Wordpress and Drupal is probably better. They have these simple functions.
By the way, the extension Multicategories is not good at all. It works badly and basicly when ever the f*ck it wants.

i've needed this from Joomla for years. Way more the the additional user permissions. Essential for travel and tourism sites where catagorizing with location and activies is needed.

This missing features is one of the reasons I will probably select another CMS. The feature could be added using an aliasing concept.

        Yes, I don't why.
But it take long time to have this basic feature !

      • Anonymous commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Please! Necessary as the air! This feature is practically everywhere, but for some reason not in Joomla.

Example: catalogs (one film, at least in 2-3 categories)

This is REALLY important functionality! Please add this to the core of Joomla!

Even the most basic website with more than a handful of pages requires this kind of functionality. Without it, you're just using duct tape and bailing wire to cobble something together. All this discussion around security concerns is meaningless since the functionality doesn't exist, and all of the hobbled-together solutions are even MORE insecure.

        Please add this soon!!

I think it is not the place for advertising.
        Thank.

I've always dreamed of this. I hope that the Joomla developers can do.
