When I get install a new template in Joomla and I want to add a module in a specific position, I literaly have to guess the name of te position where I want put the module.
Names like user1, user2, user3 are not intuitives.
And many times some positions seems dosen't work.A position map like the cheat of:
/index.php?tp=1
but in the back-end of the modules and a little more complete and readable23 votes -

Be able to control title tag, meta desc, on each article... and also on each menu...
Basically, eliminate the need for bloated SEO components to just handle title tag, meta desc, etc... should be able to set that on each article page, and each menu, then also build something in to handle 301 redirects... the fewer components the better.

Register by user group
With new ACL in 1.6, it is absolutly necessary to include a group selector in the registration form. Meaning if you create user groups for teachers and students with different access levels for each, instead of making the admin change the user from a registered to a teacher or student, it should be an option for user to select group at registration. What prevents students from registering as a teacher? An additional field for a passphrase would be added for the teacher group, that of couse would be easily distributed to the teacher before registration. Currently this can be done…

Doctrine as Joomla's database layer and/or ORM
Doctrine is a very mature and powerful ORM. The widely used framework known as Symfony relies on int as one of its main ORM plugins. Sometime before Doctrine 2.0 they split the product into two components, a database abstraction Layer (DBAL; can be used stand alone) and the ORM.
In order to make Joomla compatible with more DBMS (even MongoDB), an integration with these frameworks could really benefit the project (and the developers) rather than reinventing the wheel, as Doctrine DBAL has an extremely portable SQL language (its compiled into different DBMS SQL with portability configuyration) and Doctrine ORM has…

Custom fields in content
Possibility to add customs fields in articles, like in Wordpress. For example you can add article_img field with a value, and get this value by adding $this->article_img in your template etc etc. The limit is only your fantasy.

categories should expand or contract
Categories in level different from the 1st should should be expandable (and of course collapsable) in a sort of tree. When a website has many categories (and subs) it's a really a problem to managing them! Try to manage a website in wich are described towns and their provinces, their regions, their nations... is quite a feat :-)
